I am thinking of setting up a server for an activity I am engaged in. I don't think I'll have an IP problem since I have static IPs on all my machines. I am concerned about two things: 1. What will be the effect of my firewall(s) on the server activity and 2. by "opening up" port 10001, am I opening up a security problem?
I have recently been quite seriously hacked through a firewall/Windows exploit and I'm a little gunshy about dropping any security

1. Your firewalls may block traffic coming in to port 10001 so you may have to adjust the configuration.

2. If you "open up" port 10001 and you have QuestNet server running on your machine, QuestNet server handles everything trying to connect via port 10001, so you don't risk anything elsewhere on your machine.

QuestNet server itself is secure in that all it does is interpret commands that players type in, and give them the required output - there's nothing that any player can type in that has any access to any files on your machine etc. as the whole system is "closed". There's nothing you can type into Quest that is a risk to your machine, so likewise there's nothing that anybody else can type into your QuestNet server that is a risk to your machine.
